Dr. Champney operates at Dekalb Medical and Northside Hospital performing a wide array of general surgery and spine exposures.
Dr. Champney has been with DeKalb Surgical Associates since 2003. He received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and earned his medical degree at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee. He completed his surgical residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center serving as chief resident in 2002-2003. He is board certified in general surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). He has served as Vice Chief of the Department of Surgery at DeKalb Medical. He has also served as Section Chief for General Surgery and the Cancer Liaison Physician for the Commission on Cancer. He has consistently been named among the “Top Docs” by the Atlanta Magazine and the US News and World Report since 2017.
Dr. Champney has published papers in the American Surgeon on Incorporation of Anterior Lumbar Sacral Spine Exposure into a General Surgical Practice, Laparoscopic Resection of a Presacral Ganglioneuroma and Incidental Finding of Lymphogranuloma Venereum at the Time of Inguinal Herniorrhaphy. He presented a retrospective comparison of blue dye versus blue dye plus lymphoscintigraphy to optimize sentinel lymph node identification in breast cancer at the 2012 meeting of the Southeastern Surgical Congress.
Dr. Champney enjoys a broad practice in the field of general surgery. He has a special interest in exposure of the lumbosacral spine for orthopedic and neurosurgical spine procedures as well as advanced laparoscopic surgery. He performed the first single incision laparoscopic cholecystectomy at DeKalb Medical Center in 2008. He has subsequently performed over 100 single incision laparoscopic surgeries. More recently, he performed the first robotically assisted laparoscopic splenectomy at Dekalb Medical.
Dr. Champney is a member of the American College of Surgeons, American Society of Breast Surgeons, Southeastern Surgical Society, Georgia Surgical Society, Medical Association of Georgia, and the DeKalb Medical Society. He is on staff at DeKalb Medical Center, Northside Hospital, and Eastside Medical Center.
Dr. Champney is married to Dr. Kimberly Champney, a cardiologist at Northside Hospital. They enjoy spending time with their children, traveling, and snow skiing.
